Tarot Tuesday

My favorite card has always been The Moon card, whatever the deck but The Deviant Moon Tarot deck tops them all with Patrick Valenza's rendition of the Moon, with gossamer strings coming down from a full moon and it's two characters dancing on the end of them like marionettes.

Down through the millennia, people have always had a close affinity with the Moon. The lunar cycle affects oceans and all natural tides and if you've ever worked in a nursing home or home for the mentally ill, you can identify with this behavior, sometimes even starting a few days before the full moon occurs and a few afterward.

Many say, from hospitals, 911 call centers to the local police stations, that people are more emotionally disturbed and active when the Moon is full, hence the origin of the word lunatic. The Moon can affect our emotions because our emotions, desires and dreams come from the inner, hidden part of us.

The Moon can be one of the most complex of tarot cards... it represents the inner depths of the psyche, the powers of intuition and illusion. It is a card which represents the subconscious and tells you that there is something which isn't as simple as it may look. Often, the Moon suggests that you dig deeper into an issue.

In a tarot reading, the Moon beckons us to make a decision. Do you want to rise into a higher consciousness or remain attached to illusion? Beware of inconsistencies in your life. Something is not what it appears to be. Perhaps now is the time to trust your intuition and feelings more than your logic in worldly matters.

Tarot Tuesday

Today's card isn't exactly a tarot card per se...it's considered an oracle deck and one of my favorites! It is The Chimera from Madame Endora's Fortune Cards. This card hails from The Bestiary section of the  Madame Endora's deck, along with The Black Cat, The Gryphon and The Wyvern. The LWB states..." The Chimera represents an unlikely mixture or clash of ideas, a wild fantasy or one who is imaginative but prone to daydreams and flights of fancy. Your pursuits may be unrealistic. Imagination clouds your judgement."

I looked up the Chimera to find out just what the myths were surrounding it and all the paths lead me to one concrete conclusion...this was one mean and vicious creature!

{From the Greek meaning "she-goat" the Chimera is a fire-breathing creature that has the body of a goat, the head of a lion and the tail of a serpent.  Some sources have represented the Chimera with three heads (the lion's head as the main, then the goat's head sprouted from its back, and the serpent's or Dragon’s head on its tail), but the popular myth tells of the single, fire-vomiting head. The very unlikely aspect of the chimera has gradually turned its name into a synonym of a vain dream.}

All myths aside, drawing this card is all about grounding your decisions in reality and making well informed, wise choices... Myths or legends always seem to have a certain romanticized feel to them, like an ancient bedtime story with a few rough edges. We often feel removed from the tale but somehow fascinated by it at the same time.

This is the dreamlike influence that the Chimera represents (not to mention having so many parts can be pretty darned distracting too!) Anyhow, just keep in mind that assessing a given situation and making choices are always best done with a (one) clear head and (two) grounded feet.

Tarot Tuesday

The Seven of Cups is all about choices, opportunities and dreams, some are rather fanciful and others are more realistic and grounded. In the Seven of Cups, we see that each cup contains something different....Rainbow = hope; Dove = love; Vine = plenty; Coins= prosperity; Fire =safety; Stars = dreams; Light -=truth. This card shows us that there is an abundance of choices that we can ponder and when making decisions we must take into account how each choice will either hinder or benefit.

When visualizing these objects in the cups we can also find inspiration in them....we can become inspired to write poetry...follow a long thought of dream we have never lost site of...but if they become distractions and take us from the path we are on we must stop and decide if that is the wisest thing to do, a warning perhaps that our heads may be in the clouds a little too much and a good dose of reality is needed.

As with everything in life, we can fall into the trap of "If a little is good then a lot is even better" and that leads us to shocking catastrophe as we have seen in the Tower when our little worlds come crashing down upon our ears. Moderation is always in our best interests whether it be wise or daydream-like decisions and choices
