April Fool!

I was wondering about the origin of this goofy day and dug up some interesting facts...There are may ideas out there about just how April Fool's Day began, so I picked one of  those  explanations...

In 1582,Pope Gregory XIII ordered a new calendar the "Gregorian Calendar" to replace the old Julian Calendar. The new calendar called for New Year's Day to be celebrated Jan. 1. That year, France adopted the reformed calendar and shifted New Year's day to Jan. 1.

According to a popular explanation, many people either refused to accept the new date, or did not learn about it, and continued to celebrate New Year's Day on April 1. Other people began to make fun of these traditionalists, sending them on "fool's errands" or trying to trick them into believing something false. Eventually, the practice spread throughout Europe.

There are at least two difficulties with this explanation. The first is that it doesn't fully account for the spread of April Fools' Day to other European countries. The Gregorian calendar was not adopted by England until 1752, for example, but April Fools' Day was already well established there by that point. The second is that we have no direct historical evidence for this explanation, only conjecture.

April Fools' Day is observed throughout the world. Practices include sending someone on a "fool's errand," looking for things that don't exist; playing pranks; and trying to get people to believe ridiculous things.

The French call April 1 Poisson d'Avril, or "April Fish." French children sometimes tape a picture of a fish on the back of their schoolmates, crying "Poisson d'Avril" when the prank is discovered.

In Scotland, for example, April Fool's Day is actually celebrated for two days. The second day is devoted to pranks involving the posterior region of the body. It is called Taily Day. The origin of the "kick me" sign can be traced to this observance.

Mexico's counterpart of April Fool's Day is actually observed on December 28. Originally, the day was a sad remembrance of the slaughter of the innocent children by King Herod. It eventually evolved into a lighter commemoration involving pranks and trickery.

But keep in mind please, April Fools' practical jokes should be done in good fun and not meant to harm anyone. The best jokes are the clever ones where everyone laughs, especially the person who had the joke played on them.

Tarot Tuesday

Today's card is the Three of Cups. This is an interesting card since I must have drawn it at least three other times this last week as a daily draw...it's definitely trying to get my attention. Every morning  after I get home from taking the children to school, I light a candle and some Sandalwood or Nag Champa  incense and sit quietly (hopefully sweetie is otherwise occupied) and listen to soft music. I do this because my little rubber band has a tendency to get wound way too tight and since I am an Air sign, my rational brain does not like to relinquish control to  my creative, intuitive side very often.

Which makes this card all the more relevant. In the Three of Cups we see three women, one auburn haired wearing a reddish brown robe, one fair haired wearing a golden robe and one brunette wearing a white robe, all lifting up golden cups and doing what appears to be a dance. This card can be interpreted as pleasure, fun, entertainment, parties, family reunions, weddings, baptism, birth, success, a fun lucky turn and a gathering with a group of friends.

I admit, I haven't been in the most festive of moods over the last several weeks with having every attempt to get my tea business up and going thwarted at every turn, my car breaking down and me right after it  as I had to coast onto a side road and petty squabbles stemming from run-in's with the neighborhood bully. Festive has been the last thing on my mind but the Three of Cups keeps urging me to let all of this go, all work and no play, or so they say...

I'm reminded "Not to sweat the small stuff" because taking life too seriously can surely make for a heavy burden to carry.  Most of all, I think these ladies are trying to tell me that there is true power in multiples and I should celebrate and kick up my heels with other people for a change and not try to go it alone. I need to seek out other people to celebrate my life's blessings with (seek out being a course of action for me to take.)  It is similarities which bring us together but it is the differences which make us strong.

As you ponder this card, ask yourself these questions  "What can I do to incorporate a sense of playfulness in my daily life....? Can I accept that joy is my natural state and that I do not have to earn it...?  How can I  create or develop a network of support when I interact with others...?

Last Day

Well, today is the end of the school year and there are four very ecstatic kids in my house. Rest assured there will be boredom afoot in just a week (we're taking bets to see just how long.) I remember those days...I could hardly wait until summer vacation and the by the middle of summer there was positively, absolutely nothing to be done...or so I thought. Looking back I find myself thinking..."If only..."

Summer fun idea: Tie dye T-shirts

Items Needed

Tie dye ( I like to use RIT brand, it seems to hold color a bit better)

* T-shirts... or anything that might be of interest dying

* Large metal pot because the dye does stain wood and plastic

* Water

*Spoon

*Tongs

* Rubber bands

What To Do :

1. Take the clothing to be tie dyed and twist it up and tightly wrap the rubber band around it.

2. Do this in numerous spots all over the article so that circles will turn up everywhere you want.

3. Boil some water in a large pot and when boiling tip dye in . Add article and stir for around 30 minutes on high.

4. When finished... remove with with tongs and run under cold water to make sure all extra dye runs out.

5. Dry and take off rubber bands... iron and your piece is ready to use.

The Fine Art Of Juggling...

I did a reading that included this card today and thought it would be fun to investigate it's varied but connected meanings.

The Two of Pentacles indicates that one might experience progressive change now. there is the ability to cope with two or more situations, having learned to juggle them both but much more will be achieved once a decision is made. Think before you act... reflect on things... take a good look at your situation. Be patient time and reflection will reveal how you are doing and what your next move will be. It is essential that you maintain harmony. Do not allow this change or these disturbing influences upset you, let yourself play be flexible and venturesome it will provide scope for your intuition. Put on that happy face that the little fox exhibits.

Emotional tranquility brings clarity. Sometimes it is difficult see to the bottom of things if the surface is all stirred up. Step back from it all even if only for a moment. Expect to receive acknowledgment and reassuring news. Stop believing that spiritual development occurs only in serious moments .... pleasure and amusement can teach you a great deal, as long as you are willing to pay attention.

What two or more situations are you handling with ease... What are you adapting to.... What do you want to change in your home, profession, status, finances? What are you juggling in order to keep stable... money, finances, lifestyle? In what ways can you maybe play and use your adaptability in stressful situations?

"Nightstand Tag"

My fellow blogger, Hibiscus Moon Tagged me earlier with a rather curious exercise...it's called "Nightstand Tag" I'm always up for a bit of sport so I took a picture of my nightstand and here's the rest...

* One Halloween themed bowl, full of cat food...

* One really ugly and overpriced lamp from Ikea....

* My clock radio that's supposed to wake me up...love the snooze button!

* Last but not least, there's little Jeffery....the whole reason that there is nothing else on my nightstand!

Now that I've accomplished that, I am supposed to tag ten friends and see what they have on their nightstands. I'm not really sure what the sparseness of my nightstand means other than I believe in minimalism (and Jeffery knocks everything off of it nightly!) but it was indeed an interesting little project. Now I have just started blogging and I don't have a lot of friends yet so I hope Hibiscus Moon will pardon me but here are my fellow bloggers whom I've tagged:
(P.S.- if you would like in on the fun, please do join in!)

2.)Live From The Red Leather Couch

3.)Save Moki

4.)The Blessed Bee

6.)Barefoot In The Sand
